At the time I'm writing this it's been almost eight years since the YouTube release of A Very Potter Musical, and the group that soon after became known as "Team StarKid" released Firebringer, their tenth full-length musical production two days ago. While browsing the comment section of the video, I came across a thread discussing the quality of the production and how it has evolved/devolved over the years, A major topic of that discussion was a sentiment I've seen increasingly frequently as more and more shows have been added to the StarKid catalogue: that the team is running out of steam or there is something "lacking" in the later productions.
I'm not yet going to say whether or not I agree with the above mindset, but I think a factor in it may be a case of nostalgia goggles for some longtime supporters of the group. Many people became fans as middle- or high-schoolers and are now in their late teens and twenties! It's been a long time since that first show hit the internet, and now might be a good time to do what I've been planning to for quite some: watch all of the StarKid musicals again, see how well they hold up, and review them from not only a critical standpoint but one of a genuine understanding of the company's history and creative process. If the show is a parody, I'll also take a look at how well it does working with the source material and satirizing it.
I'm going to try to get at least one of these reviews up each week (time between some of them may be shorter or longer depending on how my life goes) and I hope to have the first of them up within the next few days. Thank you for checking out this blog and I invite you to comment on this post and all others in the future; I want this blog to serve as a discussion hub as well!
